Nicole said yes, of course, because she is all kinds of awesome and her superhero quality is to be funny and creative and genius on demand.
Check out her Jane True series of Urban Fantasy novels -- you'll thank me. Really. Nicole is h-o-t hot, and so are her books.
Nicole:
Well hello there, Pen Fatales and Readers! I am stupidly excited to be here. I haven’t had the chance to meet all of the Pens, yet, but if I were to begin waxing poetic about Juliet Blackwell, Sophie Littlefield, and Rachael Herron, I would have to write an EPIC. An epic, people. Because that’s how much I adore them.
So when Juliet asked me to guest blog here, I was super excited. I also knew I had to really dig deep, and really share. Nothing else would do for the Pens but brutal honesty. And so that’s what I did.
I like a lot of music. In fact, I would say that, for the most part, I’m pretty hip, pretty happening, pretty “in the now” when it comes to music. Except for one secret I keep buried . . . a secret so dark, so painful, I keep it hidden for fear of reprisal.
I freaking love Roxette.
I love them. I’m sorry. I know that’s like claiming allegiance to Twinkies, or to Hanson, but it’s true. I love the saccharine gooey sweetness that is Roxette. And here’s what I love about them:
- I love that I can take a power stance, and sing along with their songs in a REALLY dramatic way. The way I might, in other scenarios, herald the impending apocalypse, or sing of my lover having fallen on the battlefield, or announce that Sarah Palin has become our President.
- I love that the lyrics often mean absolutely nothing when you actually think about them. Roxette presents us with a philosophical conundrum akin to Schrödinger’s cat: If a song is sung about nothing, but with tremendous passion, does that song actually come to mean something?
- I love all of that spikey, spikey hair.
If you’re still not convinced, try it out. First, take a power stance--legs apart, arms akimbo, and head back so you’re READY TO WAIL. Now play this song and sing along as loudly as you can:
Enjoy the drama and the meaningless, all while imagining your own hair in all its potentially spikey glory. It’s infectious! Granted, it’s infectious in the same way that sexually transmitted diseases are infectious (caught doing things we know we shouldn’t be doing, with people we certainly shouldn’t be doing them with) and yet it’s SO MUCH FUN.
At least it is to me.
Stop judging, meanies.
Cuz I bet y’all have your own secret sin music! But who is brave enough to share?

I listen to "Ice Ice Baby" all the time. I can't help it. When Vanilla Ice says, "All right stop. Collaborate, and listen." I'm sucked in. It's my shame. But I can't stop.
Oh, that's too fun. I'd forgotten that. And here: come closer. (I like the first Spice Girls album. No, um, I love it. I actively hated it -- my sisters played it all the time -- until one day I snapped and it turned into love. Fine line, and all that.)
So glad you're here!
How about Paula Abdul's "Straight Up"? Or "Cold-hearted Snake"? Go-to karaoke songs, for sure ;-) Next time we're together, we should go do Karaoke! And as a nod to Sophie, I should say that I have much love for current songs, too, but they're not as much fun to confess.
Michele: YES! V-Ice is a classic of shame.
Rachael: If you want to be my lover, you gotta get with my friends. Words to live by!
Juliet: Ohhhh Paula. Yes. Paula. She dances with cartoon cats.
Awesome--listening to that song just made my morning. Especially the sparklers. My confession is that I'm a closet country music fan. There's one (one!) country music radio station in the Bay Area, and on those rare occasions when I'm driving alone, I totally indulge and hope no one hears me and takes away my city-mouse card. What can I say? I grew up on it, and it wormed its way into my brain.
You realize I'm going to have Roxette stuck in my head all morning now don't you!? na na na na na na na na na na...
And, um, how have I not heard of your amazing-sounding series before now? I love Selkie folklore. (Juliet - c'mon now, you gotta keep me in the know here!)
Haaaaaaaahhhhh! I LOVE that. I love any angsty song where you can like twist your hair and sway and just long for....something....so bad you're gonna just die. I'm so eleven that way. And I think the kids got it 'cause of their Journey obsession. You should hear us all wailing to Wheel in the Sky as I have threatened many times. :) I put on my "Evanescence" pandora whenever I want to feel like that now! And A.J., sister, I'm with you! And you can get the Sacramento station ok - oops that's prob. just an east bay thing. My friday secret, I sniffle a little to Zac Brown songs.
I don't have a particular band or song that is a guilty pleasure; it is more of a genre. Not an established genre, mind you, but one I made up in my head. I love angry songs by cute little pop princesses who think that they are being punk. Kelly Osbourne's first album "Shut Up" falls into that category. I just think it is so CUTE the way they think they have something to be angry about! Of course, it is a guilty pleasure because the target audience for this music is really my 14-year-old daughters, not 44-year-old me.
Yay Nicole is here!! :)
I don't think any music should be a guilty secret. Just like I don't think any reading should be a guilty secret. We like what we like. :)
But I did really think that video was very cool. I want to go to that venue. And someday I am going to chop off all my hair and go really short and really platinum and I'll prolly spike it just like Roxette. I've been thinking about doing it since my kids were little. :)
A.J.: Haha! I would totally shake my head at your for listening to country. And then we would both rock it out. LOL It IS so addictive! LOVE the old stuff, not such a fan of the new stuff, tho.
Gigi: Sorry for the earworm. ;-) And I dunno! But now you have! Yay for selkies love. Just don't watch Ondine . . . that m-f'er LIES. . .
Sophie: ME TOO! I am so with you on that one! Hair bands definitely did it RIGHT (even spikey-hair bands).
Dani: I love that toooooo! And I totally know what you mean! It's like you want to pet them, but they'd snarl and try to bite your hand like a wee Yorkie puppy with a bow in its hair!
Lisa: DO IT! And thanks! It's about time I was invited . . . ;-)
I know all the words to King of the Road and Hey Porter, and listen to Hispanic Heavy Metal when driving through the central valley.
It's not my fault that Billy Joel's Scenes... perfectly described my high school cohort. My *niece* likes him, so I can't be all wrong.
I would love to have been at that exact concert! Thanks for reminding me of a "classic" song I hadn't heard in far too long. I'm off now to amazon.com to buy the mp3 for my iPod.
Can't wait to get to a bookstore and read some of your books. I'm with Gigi, who asked how come I've never found your books before? Ah, well, better now than never.
Dirty little band love. We all have em. Love the series!
Mysti: LOL I love it! Thanks for sharing!
Toni: Doesn't it look dramatic??? And glad to have discovered you right back!
Rebecca: Those pens are clever gals! ;-)
Am I the only Y chromosome reading Pens? Because I don't have any musical guilty pleasures? I am only allowed to like the coolest, loudest, rock and blues and reggae and only scary classical music. Okay, I'm kidding, when I was 11, I had a pocket sized Realistic AM radio, so I really like 70's AM gold. I can't tell you how many people I've freaked out, when, instead of singing Rory Gallagher or the Dropkick Murphy's or Led Zeppelin, I start singing along to the songs in the grocery store or in an elevator. I'll admit 'Muzak' music has gotten better over time, but old Linda Rondstadt(sp), Elton John or even Barry Manilow or .. nah, that's enough, I'm going to go listen to the new Radiohead album I just downloaded, while I go check out http://nicolepeeler.com./
Thanks, BB
