Now That's HOT

by Sophie

GRAMMAR

I probably shouldn't admit this but I think tattoos are kind of, a little bit...hot.

But NOT this one:

'Cause you know what's even hotter? Grammatical mastery.

Yeah, give me a guy who can use all the elements of language properly, who can create complex sentences that still parse correctly, who can toss in a ten-dollar word offhandedly, and I'm smitten.

Oh, and you know what's really hot? A guy who knows all the rules...and then breaks them intentionally. Nothing so sweet as a run-on or fragment when it's a straight shot from heart to page...

Maybe tattoo parlors should all be required to have a Strunk'n'White and a dictionary on site...

Oh, god. I'm horrified by those tattoos.
Shudder.

I've got a couple tattoos, but as yet none with text -- and that pic is exactly why. I'd love to get a snippet of prose ("Down these mean streets..."? Ah, who knows.) but the more text, the more chances to mess up.

Of course, the art's come a long way. My first was done in a convict's apartment above an Italian restaurant by a guy who used to tour as the in-house tattooist for Ringling Brothers; my most recent, by a guy who runs a world-class shop around his schedule as a Latin teacher at a private school (how's that for hitting your crush-worthy buttons, Sophie?)

Incidentally, I commented on the disparate nature of his two careers, and he said he felt pretty diverse until he found out the Portland Sea Dog's mascot was also an undertaker.

Uffda, as my grandma used to say. And, no, I don't know how to spell 'uffda,' but I'm not getting it tattooed anywhere. (Bet someone has.)

Chris: I. Must. Meet. Your. Tattoo Guy...

and uh...there's more wit in that comment than most people get into an entire novel, just sayin'

Yeah, L.G.C., now I'm gonna waste the rest of the day thinking up the perfect tattoo for you :) - - this is just too easy, with your fondness for all those lovely symbols and artifacts!!

Jed - ha!! C'mon everyone's got a dream crush, right? Mine just isn't George Clooney or Samuel Jackson, it's a guy with perfect spelling :)

Tattoos are for other people. Not me. It hurts to get them!
