A little over a decade ago a group of friends and I started ending every lunch date or phone conversation by saying "I love you". We never got together and agreed to do it, but we were all raw from watching the endless news loop of planes crashing and buildings falling to the ground. Thankfully, the habit stuck.
I never understood people who think that the phrase "I love you" can be overused, that it somehow turns meaningless when it's heard too much. Of course, I don't believe in saying it when you don't mean it, but neither do I think anyone ever went to their deathbed regretting that they told the precious people in their lives that they were loved too much.
Every time I hear those words said to me in earnest, a little part of me lights up. Every time I say them, I feel a little lighter. No doubt, I will have many regrets in my life, but it's nice to know that being too stingy with that particular phrase won't be one of them.

i consider it a major accomplishment of my life that my kids and i say i love you to each other every single day. as someone who grew up in a household where it was never said, that feels like the biggest change of all.
I love this. Like Sophie, I grew up in a house where no one EVER said it. I started saying it to my family when I was about 18, and nothing has ever felt more embarrassing. But I kept it up, and now we always, always say it. I love you!
I make it a point to to tell my beautiful wife and wonderful kids every day that I love them, many times a day in fact :^) It's really something you can't over-do.
count me in as yet another "I love you" overuser -- love it! And love YOU!

I got married kind of late in life, compared to some. I'd been watching the good couples (and the troubled ones!), taking notes, so I wouldn't take too long to catch up. One thing I expected, to fall into a rut, to stop saying "I love you" like newlyweds, to grow bored with my husband. Well, it's been a LONG ASS time now, nearly fifteen years together, eleven-ish of them married, and we still are all "I love you" and "thank you for Xing the Y," and whatnot.
Thanks for letting me know it's not just me :)
